Vitamin D Is A Hormone, NOT Just A Vitamin!

June 5, 2025

How Vitamin D & Sunlight Work:

1. Your skin produces inactive vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) from sunlight.

2. It's then converted by the liver to calcidiol (25-hydroxyvitamin D).

3. The kidneys convert calcidiol into its active hormone form, calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D).

Calcitriol is a hormone, not a vitamin — it regulates:

• Calcium and phosphorus balance

• Immune function

• Cellular growth

• Bone density

• Inflammation reduction

ANIMAL PROTEIN & KIDNEY STRESS

Why High-Animal-Protein Diets Are Problematic:

1. Kidney Overload

*Animal protein is acid-forming and nitrogen-rich (from amino acids).

*The kidneys must work harder to eliminate acidic byproducts and urea.

*Over time, this can lead to glomerular hyperfiltration — a strain that impairs kidney function.

2. Reduced Calcitriol Production

*If kidneys are inflamed or overworked, they produce less calcitriol, even if vitamin D levels appear “normal” on tests.

*This leads to functional vitamin D deficiency — especially problematic for bone health, immune support, and chronic disease risk.

3. Phosphate Load from Meat

*Animal products are high in phosphate, which can disrupt the calcium-phosphate balance, further reducing vitamin D activation.

*Excess phosphate also triggers parathyroid hormone (PTH), which can leach calcium from bones.

4. Chronic Inflammation

*Diets high in animal products have been shown to increase systemic inflammation, which can impair both kidney function and vitamin D metabolism.

PLANT-BASED DIETS PROTECT KIDNEY & VITAMIN D FUNCTION

• Plant proteins are less taxing on the kidneys.

• They create a more alkaline environment, easing the acid burden.

• Phytochemicals in plants support kidney and liver detoxification, aiding in vitamin D activation.

• Fiber-rich diets support gut microbiota that may assist in vitamin D metabolism as well.

High-Animal-Protein Diet Creates:

High Kidney Strain

High Phosphate Load

Elevated Inflammation

Impaired Vitamin D Function

Decreased Calcitriol Production

Whole-Food Plant-Based Diet Creates:

Low Kidney Strain

Low Phosphate Load

Reduced Inflammation

Optimized Vitamin D Function

Maintained Calcitriol Production

I FIRST learned about this when I read "The China Study" many years ago... a LONG-TERM, 20-year study with a lot of surprising, life-saving results!

Our Vitamin D production is a highly intelligent hormone network that reminds researchers of flocks of birds flying in sync... miraculous and beautiful...
